Is a 3*plus room possible in Rome for under $200?

If so, names please. We leave July 6, and I'm not seeing much that appeals. I think I'd like to stay in Trastevere, Vatican area, or central historic distric, but will I have to pay much more to do so?

You may be able to get a deal on Priceline or Hotwire, but be very careful about the zones. See www.betterbidding.com .

Domus Julia or Hotel Julia, near the Spanish Steps. Nice breakfast room with complimentary breakfast included. Very clean and relatively charming. We can recommend it personally. (We had a twin room in Domus Julia, where we also had use of a private dining/sitting room.)

I was prepared to throw out a "zing" to you, Zerlina - - for suggesting Albergo Cesari... excellent choice, of course, but I thought I would check price and availability to point out how... NO WAY it would be available for under $200 USD.

Well, surprise, surprise! I tried the rate checker on tripadvisor.com for the arbitrary dates of July 7-10 and got three astonishingly different rates...

Expedia (for two TWIN beds) $127 USD per rm, per night!
Venere (for "superior" dbl) 235 euro per rm/per night (about what i might have expected, if not higher)
Booking.com (also for "superior" dbl AND breakfast included) 420 euro for all 3 nights, marked down fronm 720 euro.

It says only 2 rooms left - - I would say grab then immediately!

You can NOT choose a better location.

oh... and hats off to Zerlina...

Best wishes,

Rex

I spent 4 unforgettable days in Rome. Usually, when I travel, I stay in Hotel but this time I followed a suggestion of friend of mine and I rent a comfortable and practical apartment located just 50 meters from the Piazza San Pietro (see the web portal http://www.leonholidayapartments.com ). The stay has been cheaper and more comfortable than in the Hotel. I suggest everyone who is planning a trip to Rome to rent this apartment.

Leonora,

Check the following booking agency:

www.reservationitaly.com

I have used them twice, the most recent time for my upcoming trip to Rome on first week of July. I booked the Hotel dei Mellini, a 4 stars hotel, for 180 Euros, incl breakfast and all taxes. That is for a deluxe room. They are offering their standard rooms at approx 160 Euros. It is a very good hotel, I stayed there a few years ago and still gets good reviews in Tripadvisor.
