If he actually took you into London and back and a bit of touring around - at least nowadays - that would cost probably £200. Just straight into to the city and back would cost £140-£150.</i>

Yes he actually took me into London and showed me around, including some of his favorite pubs with non-stop commentary. It was worth it and a memory I will always have. I think it was closer to &pound;50 when I did it.

If I was going to do that now I would take the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station and catch a taxi from there. The HEX runs every 15 minutes, takes about 15 minutes, and costs &pound;34 round trip. Of course service is not guaranteed but their web site has up to date service information https://www.heathrowexpress.com/. I had a hotel near Paddington (no comments, please!) and used the HEX. It is a very good service.

That must have been many years ago. Just a cab ride into central London now runs £60-£70.

Now, I've taken lots cab tours around London starting back in the 70's. what cost £7 35 years ago and maybe £25 20 years ago is £200 or more. I don't think that is a useful suggestion is all I'm saying. And the HEX version would still cost probably over £100.

And the possibility of getting stuck in traffic somewhere . . . IMO just bad advice.

I'd follow Gardy's plan. You only live life once, and sitting in T5 just to be on the cautious side doesn't fit my profile.

Wise decision. Plus I like Heathrow. There's plenty to do there to kill a few extra hours (yes including showers, massage, etc.). Not to mention world-class people-watching!
