Ireland in August

My husband and I plan to travel around Ireland in early August. Does anyone know if it is critical that we have prior room reservations each night during this time or can we just be on our own and find a comfortable and clean place to sleep each night wherever we happen to find ourselves? Thanks so much!

We were in Ireland in March and needed reservations in the larger cities even then - especially if you are using vouchers for B&B's.

Depends which part of Ireland you are thinking of visiting. If you depart from the usual tourist areas ,even if only a slight diversion you will be ablre to pick up good quality Bed and Breakfast without too much trouble.

The last time I was in Ireland was August of 2000. We booked a couple before leaving home and booked the rest as we traveled. The B&B owners are more than happy to call ahead for you - if you know where you are headed. We spotted B&B along the way and call on them or called nearby B&B's from public telephones, booked and obtained directions. One B&B owner was kind enough to drive into town and show us the way as he was headed into town to a shop. You will find them very accomodating and friendly.

If you're spending any nights in Dublin, DEFINITELY book a room well ahead of time. I once called 47 hotels and B&Bs in Dublin without any luck for a weekend in October. Ended up in a nasty youth hostel.
