Ireland- Dublin nightlife
My friend and I are going to Dublin and Kilkenny on February 7th. I have our days pretty well planned. I was wondering if anybody has any advice for nightlife in these areas. We are 40 years old, I am married, she is not. I like traditional pubs, but wouldn't be adverse to going to a more modern place, but I don't want to stumble into a twentysomething scene. Thank you for any help.

In Dublin stay out of Temple Bar if you want to avoid the youngsters. We want to a great pub, which a cab driver recommened but can't remember the name. Sorry!
Kilkenny has great night life. Believe it or not we had a great time at a club called Paris, Texas.

We were there last weekend and had a wonderful time at a pub called O'Donoghues on Merrion Row. We are in our 40's too and were looking for a smaller pub with traditional music. O'Donoghues was recommended by a local tour guide and he was right on. There were several local musicians parked around the front table playing up a storm which only ended when the pub closed at around midnight. Definitely worth the trip off the main drag.
Have a great trip!
Also, there is a small, older place called The Palace right across the street from the Westin. There wasn't music the night we arrived (almost midnight on Friday) but the Guinness and company was wonderful.

Oh, and just in case you're wondering what time the music starts, the old Irish farmer that I ended up drinking with told us that the musicians had been there since two-ish and he'd arrived at four. We closed the pub at midnight
That was a Sunday, so I'm not sure about weekday music.
Also, I don't know if they have food, but it didn't seem so to us when we first walked in. We just went across the street and down a few feet to the other pub in the block, where we ate before returning to O'Donoghues. Have a Guinness (or two) for me!

40ish nightlife - People of all ages tend to mix in the pubd. there are places for nightclubs for the 20's crowd but not all of Temple bar is full of that. Pubs - I would go to McDaids and Bruxelles upstairs or outside on McGratton street off Grafton Street.
Also I like Davy's byrnes for an afterwork drink its on S. Anne Street off Grafton St. Across from it is the baily which I am not a fan of but it has a nice outside area to sit if the waether is nice. Also I am a fan of the Clarendon on Clarendon street. Abit modern nice wines by the glass and unusual building up to the top floor. Outside terrace is a bit of fun too.
For a cocktail and some Piano Music try the Lobby of the Westbury hotel.
