We use Argus Rentals, www.argusrentals.com and haven't had any issues. That's just one option, but the only one I can advise on.

Check out this website:

Sixt seems to have a better rate over Thrifty, Dan Dooley, and Argus.

You should really get quite few quotes from different companies and sources for them. I got quotes from companies online that were much different than I got when I called direct. The best price we found was from Dan Dooley (using www.irelandexpert.com you get an extra
10% off) On the CDW issue ( long debated) we waived the CDW this year and all went well. After several calls etc. to our mastercard to make sure we were covered. You can also bid on pricelines uk site www.priceline.co.uk
Make sure you know what a good deal is before you attempt that though!

i rented last march and i used auto europe which they contracted through hertz....
there are some issues with insurance in ireland...there have been several discussion about this on fodors...basicaly the only way you can waive the cdw is to use a mastercard, not visa or amex....if you don't waive this insurance you can expect it to equal the amount of your entire car rental (50% of final cost)...generally cars are quite expensive to rent in ireland...automatics are outrageous in price so choose a shift if you can possibly do it....also get as small a car as you can get away with...
i picked up and returned in shannon...it was very easy.

The rates are probably dependent upon the time you are going.
We're going in May, and I plugged in the dates with Thrifty, Sixt, Dan Dooley, and Argus, and found that Sixt was the least expensive for the 9 days we were renting. I was a little surprised because we have always used Dan Dooley in the past. I plugged in Autoeurope and found them to be even less expensive. Thanks rhkkmk.

If you use a travel agent they can get you a quote from several rental car companys. Select an automatic--it cost more but is well worth it. Do not get anything bigger than mid size. Also, Ireland requires that if you use your credit card it must clearly state that it covers the necessary insurance requirements for collision, etc.

Does anyone know.... I thought a way to avoid the CDW was to allow the rental car company to place a large "hold" on your credit card to cover any possible damage. Return car in good shape - no charge, no CDW. I guess the downside is, should you have an accident you are responsible for all repairs/damage.... My General Liabilty policy would cover any "horrible" happenings with or without the CDW. Maybe something to consider if you "feel lucky"

Just peeked, more to see if we've been overpaying, than enything. Argus is 191.61 Euro for the 9 day period with CDW, liability and taxes for a Nissan Micra (same class as Ford Fiesta), manual tranny, airport pickup/dropoff.
Cheapest automatic was 255Eu for 9 days, inclusive.

Visiting Ireland in May. Car rental prices seem to be all over the map. For an economy automatic for 13 days (base rate incl VAT & airport service charge), I've received following quotes:
Hertz 461 EUR
Avis 476 EUR
O'Scannlain (prepaid with Hertz) 524 USD
Sixt 322 USD
Dan Dooley 546 EUR (requires deposit)
Argus 494 EUR (requires 20% deposit)
The Sixt deal is quite good. As I Hilton Honors Diamond level member, they offer 30% off regular rates so the regular rate would have been 460 USD, still good.
