Good Car Rental Company in Ireland???

Greetings. My wife and I will be flying into Shannon this May for a 10 day vacation (our first visit). Any recommendations as to reliable car company to rent a car from? We've used Auto Europe in Europe with good sucess in the past, but I'd like to hear who you've rented with in Ireland and how it went. In terms of car size, it will be just the two of us and we don't carry much lugguge. Thank you.

We had a wonderful experience renting through Trish Lyndon at the North American office of Dan Dooley. She was wonderful in helping us figure out which car to take , helping us avoid CDW with the right gold Mastercard, and had arranged for a perfect upgrade when we got there.

mlc,

Your question is a good and important one. My wife and I have rented cars in Ireland for a good many years and we''ve been most satisfied with Dan Dooley. This company doesn't have the marketing muscle of others such as Avis and Hertz, but offers good, reliable autos at a fair rate.

Speaking of Hertz, prospective customers should recall the words of Ben Franklin, warning folks not to be "penny wise and pound foolish". Hertz' often offers very attractive up-front rates, but then goes out of it way "shaking down" its customers with unexpected costs, often having to do with nicks, brush scratches, and other superficialities having to do with every day, thoroughly reasonable driving habits. In the end, your attractive up-front cost has suddenly transformed into one steep, unreasonable bill. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. Make a point of staying clear of Hertz.

As to car size, you might want to consider renting a compact. While more expensive than a sub-compact, a Corolla-type vehicle is worth the extra cost, particularly if the driver is tall.

Best of luck.

I used Dan Dooley in the past and was very happy with them, but I am going to Ireland in May for 9 days also, and found my quote from Dan Dooley too high. I found Autoeurope to be the best value and will rent from them this time. They quoted me $203.00 for 9 days plus of course 13.5% tax.

I thought you had to use a platinum Mastercard to get the CDW waived. I didn't know that a Gold would do it, but I would check in advance.

There have been some mixed reports on Dan Dooley, but I had nothing but excellent service from them. They also had the lowest rate by a landslide when I was doing my research. I picked up and returned at Shannon airport.

I thought Dan Dooley was great. I booked a fly and drive thru Sceptre Tours.
