Intinerary/Hotels (Amsterdam, Belgium, Germany)
My husband and I will be leaving for Belgium, Amsterdam and Germany at the end of August. Following is our itinerary (we will be traveling from city to city by train). Any thoughts? Also, I am looking for cheap, clean and central hotels. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Amsterdam (4 days)
Berlin 3 ½ days
Munich 3 days

What is your definition of cheap? How much per night?
You can find some excellent deals on hotels in Brussels in August. But you need to wait until the summer for most of them to become available. I saw business class hotels going for under 100 euro per night during some August weekends (i.e., the Hilton, the Sofitel Toison d'Or, the Novotel, the Best Western Cinquantenaire, etc.).
I would also strongly recommend you spend the night in Bruges. There are so many daytrippers in August, it's quite crowded. Unfortunately for them, they miss how magical the city is at night.
P.S. And don't let peope try to talk you out of visiting Brussels, tell you that it's not worth seeing, or is only worth a day trip. We lived there 5 years (and still have an apartment there) and never ran out of things to do or see. Admittedly, it takes a little more work to enjoy Brussels than the "in your face" tourist hotspots like Amsterdam or Paris, but with a little initiative, there is a LOT more to the city than the casual visitor bothers to find out.

hope to give some help,
indeed Bruges is more acctractive for tourist than Brussels (I'm from Belgium Bruges, know the Capital and my own town very well) so I know what I say.
I'll don't talk more, but listen and read the other users for pictures about
Bruges :
http://users.pandor.be/shootingstar (to the left choose Bruges)
-> I added this site and pictures again because a lot of people are searching for information -it should grow in 2005- for more information feel free to contact me.
IN AUGUST you would, however it is your choise BETTER OF WITH 3 DAYS BRUGES ---> make a one day trip to brussels
> and one to the belgium coastline
> travel connections for amsterdam are as easy as brussels (brussel bruges is only 1 hour)
for cheap sleeping I suggest YOUTH HOSTEL -> there is one, in the centre of bruges, but there is a better one in ASSEBROEK -> if this is your category of travelling I could search for more information.
Lot's of cheap hotels also in Bruges, Brussels is more business like, not so much tourist attractions, except the ATOMIUM & MANNEKE PIS
Also try to catch : INTERNATIONAL FIRE WORK FESTIVAL = KNOKKE = it's at 17 19 21 23 25 of august (music and fireworks about 30 minutes) --> the leftovers of ancient MONACO KNOKKE dekadence I guess.
(+100.000 visitors every day, so it will be worth the view and visit) You can catch the last train back to bruges if you would like to visit it (22h00 start fireworks , last train back around 23h00)

Aquadigo, that's your idea of the main tourist attractions in Brussels--the atomium (blecch) and the Mannekin Pis (also blecch)? You need to spend a little more time in your capital city if those are the only things you can recommend. Why not send visitors to the Van Buren Museum or the museum of antique musical instruments? To the festivals in the Parc Woluwe? To the nightspots like Mappa? To the special exhibits at the Cinquantenaire museums? To the market at Marolles? To the music festivals held around town? To the many excellent moderately priced restaurants on and around the Chaussee Waterloo in Ixelles? To the ever changing art exhibits at the local commune museums (like the excellent exhibit on Art Nouveau posters at the Ixelles museum)?
What a shame that you feel the need to shortchange and disparage your own capital.

A'dam: Having stayed at Hotel Kap (in a single for 5 days 2 years ago 57 euro per night) if I go back to Amsterdam will spend a bit more money for a somewhat nicer room.
For Sam, it *was* cheap and in a very good location not far from the Leidseplein district if that's truly all you're interested in. The breakfast was included and quite nice.

aquadigio, there was an error in your web site address. The correct address should be:
http://users.pandora.be/shootingstar/
(in your post, you spelled it pandor instead of pandora)

sam517- Brugges is outstanding! My wife and I enjoyed our stay there at the Pandhotel. Very romantic town.
Great canals, easy to walk, friendly people. Lots to do and see. Cute shops. An excellent European experience.
The Pandhotel is a B&B and is part of the Small Hotels of Europe Group. You won't be disappointed!
Have a great time.

You might wish to check out the hotel list and user reviews for Amsterdam hotels at www.channels.nl
I know you are traveling by rail and the trip from Berlin to Munich is quite nice but takes between 6-7 hours by the fastest services (ICE). You may want to consider a budget flight between these two cities which would maximize your time a bit. www.whichbudget.com lists possibilities.

My husband and I stayed at a b & b in Amsterdam, the Op de Gracht on Prinsengracht canal. It was a quiet location, maybe 30 feet from the great electric trams. The room was large with a great bed and down comforter. I could sit in the room and watch the boats go by forever!
The only caveat is that there is a very narrow stairway to climb each night!
