http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/informa...dpenalties.jsp

the site also has the details of licence requirements for students, as AlanRow noted in his post.

Don't worry about the licence. The worst thing that can happen is the TV licence bloke turns up and asks if they've got one. All she needs to do is point him in the direction of the Landlord and act dumb.

More importantly: Is council tax included?

What a great experience for your daughter! I wish I had done something like that while I was in school (and had my parents to help!)

My husband and I just moved to Edinburgh from Pittsburgh, PA. I grew up in New York, and am constantly shocked at how much more expensive everything is here than it is back home - even NY is looking affordable now. The easiest way to figure out a budget is to look at what she spends now and double it - everything costs about in pounds what it does in dollars, if not more, and as several above posters have mentioned, we go out a lot more often than we used to. It truly is a part of the culture here and we're enjoying it!

Make sure to find out about council tax - the TV and council tax were fairly horrible surprises.

Good luck to her!

I work for an airline and fly internationally and as much as my coworkers and I love London-its way too expensive on a weekly basis. We layover in Crawley by Gatwick airport and even everything in that area is double priced of what it is in the USA.I love Boots drugstore;Clarks shoes and takeout from Marks and Spencer or Sainsbury BUT the only places that I can afford to shop at are the Oxfam shops(thrift stores-great for used books!).London is my only trip where the only thing I bring home is dirty clothes!(Sorry Flanneruk but I do many daytrips around London and everything is extremely expensive when converting US dollars to British pounds.)

"Expensive" is apparently a very subjective term for some folks.

On a recent trip to NYC I had breakfast in a hotel and sat between two couples from different parts of Britain. They both thought New York was 'expensive.' They also told me they thought London is 'expensive' too!
