Our family rented a minivan last year for 2 weeks in Spain. We were advised by our travel agent and a friend living in Spain that if there is an incident, the police somehow feel that is an official endorsement and there is less trouble. Hey, it's only $10 at AAA. Why not? Judy

I have posted this info repeteadly so bare with me those who read this already. I strongly advised an IDL if driving in Andalucia. Routine check points are common in Southern Spain (immigration problems) and since English is not really widespread, it is to your advantage to hand over the IDL and let them figure your ID info provided by the carnet. However, if for some reason they feel there is a reason to hold your license, they'll hold your IDL. If this is an expired document, you may be ask to relinquish your States license. I rather let them take the IDL that deal with DMV when back home. We have rented three times in Spain, once, on our way to Ronda, we were stopped and asked for our licenses. My husband handed over the IDL, there was no further questioning, we were directed to continued on and had no problems at all. Well worth the $10 and the pic.
