Will be renting a car in Germany-- have seen articles on line that say no you don't need an IDL to drive in Germany and then others say YES you need one...anyone have any idea which it is?? Thanks

It is not an IDL -- it os an IDP . . . International Drivers Permit and is not a license. It is a translation of your regular license. They may or may not ask to see it when you collect the car, but if it is a requirement (and it is) and if there is a problem and you don't have one they would be within the terms of the contract to void your insurance. Much better safe than sorry . . .

Germany is one of the European countries that doesn’t require an IDP for drivers with US state licenses, but if you decide to drive in Austria you will need one. Since AAA charges only $20 for an IDP you may as well get one anyway.

The US Department of State website says simply: “If you hold a valid U.S. driver’s license you can drive in Germany for up to six months without needing a German driver’s license.”
