Inismaan, ideas?
Hello, I will be traveling to the middle island this September and just thought that I'd ask for some of your experiences for enjoying this place for a couple of days. I am staying at the An Dun B&B but would certainly welcome suggestions. I'm not looking to do the touristy things, but probably a little. Thanks, Keenan

Hi Keenan ? I?m very familiar with Inish Maan and if you are looking for a relaxing quiet placing for walking and solitude - it?s the place. There aren?t any touristy things to do except walk to the various ruins and ?duns? forts on the island. It is a beautiful place to be if you have nice weather while you are there. A few days there and you will have seen everything easily. The island is very small, only a few miles and is the quietest of the 3 Aran Islands. It has 1 pub, a few shops and a hotel with a pub in it. The most convenient way to reach the island is from Rosseveal in Connemara, a bus leaves from Galway city, if you aren?t driving, that meets all the boats. I?d be happy to answer any questions you have!!!

The solitude is what I am looking for as well as a good pub. I had found some info on Synge and his visits to the island. I was excited to learn that he always visited in September and that he was unsettled about how the modern world had intruded into the Irish culture, but not on Inismaan. I'm in the process of getting his book,'The Aran Islands', which is a chronicle of his visits. Anyway, if you have any inside info I'd be most appreciative. I did find out that the Doolin ferry will be running to the island in September and since I will be in Doolin the previous day it will be most convenient. Bill, I do believe that the An Dun rents bicycles. Regards, KJS

The pub on the island is a great spot, filled with lots of character. The ferry from Doolin runs daily from Doolin to the other islands but does not always stop on Inish Maan. Many people have gotten to the pier in Doolin and then been told that they could not reach the island that day. Only a word of warning!!

Thanks Imh2, I will be sure to follow up closely with the ferry schedules so as not to get stranded, although I could think of far worse places to be left behind. The pub sounds very nice. I am excited to be finally reaching this island. I appreciate the insight. Take care and good travels, Keenan
