We have just returned from a 5 day trip to Barcelona and would recommend that you take the Open Top Bus tour of the city.
The tours leave from Placa Catalunya on a regular basis on two different routes.
A two day pass (recommended) costs 18 Euros and is well worth the money. You get to see the most interesting parts of the city and can hop on and hop off at any of the stops to visit places of special interest.
As for hotels, make your mind up quickly as they get booked up well in advance.
We stayed at the Hotel Continental on Las Ramblas, just by Placa Catalunya.
We had a balcony overlooking the Ramblas and it was a joy just to sit there - glass of wine in hand - and just watch the street life after a hectic day of sightseeing and before going out to dinner.
Enjoy your trip!
Totally agree with Maggie about the "Bus Turistica"....

We have stayed at the Citadines "Aparthotel" directly on La Rambla on 3 separate occaisions. It's kind of like a Marriot Residence Inn or something. They have one, two and three bedroom suites for no more than other area hotels. They have a small kitchen and are located right across from the great city market.

We LOVE Barcelona... have a great time!

Barry

Point your browser to the following URL:
http://www.barcelonaturisme.org
The site is run by the city's tourism organization. It is available in Catalan, Spanish, Engl;sh & French. The Miami Herald's Travel Section had a few articles on Barcelona in last Sunday's edition (24-Mar-2002). Don't know if the articles are still available online. Try http://www.herald.com
We're headed to Barcelona for a 3-day stay in late April.
Good luck!
