Nice Megane model. Must be fun to drive.

It's too bad, that those aren't the ones that the rental companies( Hertz, Avis) normally rents out.

Yup Avis and Hertz always have the small models (i remember my terror moment when on a french autoroute, trying to overtake a lorry, i was realized that the rental 205 i was driving was a 900cc engine (when you are used to a minimum of 2liters)

The two best rentals I have had in Europe were a VW Passat with a 6 speed manual shift that was quick and slick. I think the engine was a 1.4 liter turbo. With 6 forward speeds, that baby would move.

The other one was a Magrane. It was a good car. It was a 5 speed, but well balanced.

I grew up shifting gears and my present car is a 5 speed. I would like a 6 speed, such as an Acura TL!! Maybe next year.

The absolute biggest difference in driving the autobahn, or autostrata, or any auto ----- is the American's tendency to "hang out" in the left lane, as mentioned above. After driving in Europe, it is maddening here in US to find drivers loitering in the left lane oblivious to faster traffic. (As a consequence, we are much quicker to pass on the right here.)
On an auto-----, if my attention wanders and for an instant I loiter in the left lane, I am suddenly reminded by a rear view mirror full of headlights which came from nowhere, angrily flashing at me to get the hell over.
Just stay on the right, as almost everyone of the posters has said here. You'll do great.

It is easy, the principal should be the same as here in the USA, stay in the right, pass on the left.

Americans seems to forget this or just have the old attitude hey im going fast enough I am not moving over.

Dont get to upset when they tail gate you when your in the left going to slow.

2 choices sit back and cruise and enjoy the show, or get into the fun and drive fast. But either way follow the simple rules.

Than when you get home do the same.

I highly recommend the use of the hazard button. Use it as soon as you see a proliferation of brake lights in front of you. I always wait til I see at least two cars behind me with theirs on before I shut mine off.

When you are tail=gated while driving in the autobahn, don't "sit back and enjoy the show". That's not the discplined European way of driving is. Move safely onto the right lane and let them pass. Remember, you are not in the US anymore, where drivers of those large soccer mom vans and the Toyota Camry's cruising at 60 mph on the left-most lane of a 65mph interstate highway dangerously beleive that it's their rightful driving lane.

bilboy Enjoy the show referred to the simple rules I said if your referring to my post.

Go slow stay right, pass on left. Certainly living in Florida that isn't followed here and its horrible. But there are no left lane laws in Florida.

Go re-read

wow bil boy

you have to read the whole thing, not just snippets.

"It is easy, the principal should be the same as here in the USA, stay in the right, pass on the left."

I see where you are getting confused, but read the whole thing. No way I would advocate anyone hanging in the left lane it is very annoying, rude, disrespectfull.

Dont get mad when they tailgate you was saying move over. It all goes back to the opening paragraph.

I will make my posts more clear for you.

So I went and re-read your turn. Or better yet lets go race on the autobahn. Ill be there in December.

And leave the soccer moms alone, why profile, its the old people not the soccer moms. Or maybe its also the yahoo redneck nascar loving tobacco chewing pick up driving cowboys. Soccer moms drive like nuts cause there always late.
