Oh, of course the UK, there are some very cheap Farmhouses that offer B&B especially in the Yorkshire Dales/Lake District. Our favourite accommodation (home and abroad) is in Ullswater where it was not only cheap but the most attentive we have ever stayed. The owner gave us maps, direction and lots of information about walks in the area.(Easytraveler: do you remember the name of the Swiss Pension?).

Steve: I'll try to find the name, but it was years ago.
Good looking lady, too! In a healthy Swiss way, like a grown-up Heidi, rosy cheeks and all.
Steve, what European websites for B&Bs do you use?

I've found that the local websites of the towns I'm going to visit often have the best accommodation listings. They usually list the hotels, plus separate categories for apartments and bed & breakasts/pensions/sobes, etc.
You can always cross-reference them by doing an internet search -- often folks may not write a review on Tripadvisor, for example, but they'll mention it in a casual blog post, which shows up on the search results. I've found quite a few places this way.

I am a member of the walking association, the Ramblers and use their recommendations (see below)
http://www.ramblers.org.uk/info/accommodation
The following has quite cheap accommodation but confined to the Lake District
www.lakeshospitality.co.uk
The following is our favourite by Ullswater (Lake District)

Just booked a two floor/2 bedroom Ferienwohnung in Bamberg, Germany for next May at 390 Euros FOR THE WEEK! Now THAT's a price! Swanky bathroom and huge Living room!
Finding many 3* and 4* hotels in Frankfurts Bahnhoviertel for 60-70E on booking.com and venere.com for our final two nights.
Still waiting for that optimal (okay, at least somewhat better) airfare though!
