Indoor running/walking track, West Hampstead
Hi fodorites,
As part of his cardio rehab program, my SO speedwalks/jogs 3 miles three times a week. He currently does this either at the fitness centre at his university or outdoors in our neighbourhood. He's fine with doing it outdoors while we're in London too but I'd love to find him an indoor track not too far from where we'll be living (West End Lane, near West Hampstead tube station ) so that inclement weather won't be a problem.
I've looked at the YMCA website but I don't see any with fitness facilities in our neighbourhood. I've emailed the head office but haven't heard back from them yet. And, of course, just because a Y has a fitness centre doesn't mean it has a running track.
It doesn't have to be a posh club with lots of facilities because he'll probably only use the track, although I certainly wouldn't mind finding a Zumba class too.
Anyone know of such a place in WH?
Thanks
gtg

A quick search on yell.com suggests posh clubs may be all there is in the area.

Thanks, Patrick. I didn't see anything there either. We could afford a posh club for the short time we're there but none of those seem to have tracks anyway. That's a great website, though, so thanks for letting me see it.

Not quite sure what you mean by a track, but if you mean a covered area with an athletics track - we just don't have the space unless for something like an Olympic stadium! The most likely thing is treadmills and the like in a fitness centre.
The nearest municipal centre is at Swiss Cottage:

Indoor tracks? Inclement weather?
Just how woosy can you humans get?
The Boss used to try this one on if there were a few drops of rain. So I told him: I expected at least two miles, at least twice a day, rain, hail or shine, or he'd be cleaning up accidents on the nice white carpet every hour on the hour.
Decent anorak and waterproof shoes (well you've got to pander to human frailty) and I've not heard a peep out of him since. You've got a park next door: why on earth would your husband want to stay cooped up in a gym?
The Boss actually used to try this gym nonsense before I came along. Now I've injected some moral fibre into him, he gets more exercise, his BP's lower, his gym fees have stopped bankrupting him and he's learned about Nature.
None of my London chums (and they really are the wimpiest disgrace to dogdom on the planet) stay indoors for a few drops of rain. If their Bosses (and they really are as backbone-deprived as any human can get) can take them out when it's a bit damp, anyone can.

Lots of fitness facilities here, especially at universities and Ys have a gymnasium with a track that's 'upstairs' and is suspended over the gym -- even the very old buildings. The athletic facility I generally use (at my university) has a multi-lane indoor track that runs around the excercise/volleyball/basketball courts, but it's a pretty big, modern facility.
I guess we're more used to indoor tracks here because of the weather. For most of the winter, it would be difficult to run outdoors. I don't think (last winter aside) you'd have enough snow to prevent that and you're all hearty enough to run in the rain! I'm glad you mentioned treadmills though. I'd forgotten about that and it would most likely be the next best thing. Thanks again.
