My first wife did not like coffee in Europe, would not drink it, so I divorced her (the first time a marriage ended DUE to insufficient grounds).

Anyway, my rankings are (in a close race)
1) France
2) Italy
3) Netherlands

I don't drink the stuff but my husband loves his coffee strong and black and he thinks Italian coffee is a mere 3rd behind German and French. That's based on expresso alone. I can vouch for the fact that the French expresso was so strong that he had heart palpatations on the Pont Neuf and I thought we were going to have to rush him to the hospital!!

"he had heart palpatations on the Pont Neuf"

I've also had heart palpatations on the Pont Neuf, but I believe it had nothing to do with the Espresso..

Italy. At Caffe Sant'Eustachio (in Piazza Sant'Eustachio, near the Pantheon). Their cappuccino is to die for!

MaiTai-It was on our honeymoon so I was hoping the palpitations were out of his love for me--no such luck, it was the 3 expressos he had that morning!!! So much for young and in love

No surprise that Greece isn't mentioned here!

I actually like the Greek or Turkish coffee metrious (did I spell that right?) My favorite is Kaffee mit Schlagobers. There is just something about saying schlag...I guess.

The coffee we had in Italy seldom was hot enough for our tastes. I really liked the coffee in Germany, to my surprise. It's just different than the coffee I drink here, a different roast, and I always had to have it with cream and sugar, which I never do at home. I make my coffee very strong at home, so the difference is not in the strength, it's in the way they roast their beans. Mind you, I still prefer my own roast, made at home, but I came to really appreciate the coffee in Germany, while the coffee in Italy seemed always to me to be a bit on the tepid side.

I think I liked the coffee in Italy, and after dinner it's OK in France, (I find I have to drink it with milk in Europe, and I prefer my coffee black) but the BEST morning coffee I've ever had on a vacation anywhere was Blue Mountain coffee on Negril Beach in Jamaica.

My best expresso was at the entrance of El Vaticano.

uhoh, if you drink your coffee black, why do you have to take it with milk in Europe?

I'm a black coffe drinker and can't stand it with milk - it's a completely different drink.

Uhoh, I bought a pound of Jamaican Blue Mt. coffee as a gift for a friend and then discovered she only drinks decaf, so I was "forced" to keep it myself. It is truly wonderful, and the price certainly reflects the high quality!

I loved the cafe freddo in Greece. I have taken to making it at home; nescafe, ice, equal and a martini shaker. Amazing how that makes that frothy glass of foamy treat.

Okay, so it's not in Europe but the coffee I had in Costa Rica topped anything I had in Europe, though I'm not a cappacino drinker

Grasshopper, many years ago they used to call that a "Nescafe frappe" in Greece. We loved them and drank them all the time. I guess they've updated the name to sound trendier. Also, it seemed like the Nescafe was stronger than the stuff we can buy here.

Italy, best cappucino. Absolute worst coffee. Greece and Turkey.

I agree that Italy has the very best but we recently had wonderful "coffee melange" in Vienna that was to die for.
