I only use safes in the best hotels where they have an international reputaion to uphold. In these cases I leave everything in the safe other than what I need. Otherwise I take everything with me. This is a risk but I once had everything stolen off me in a cheap hotel in Mexico so I just run the (slight) risk that I may be the victim of a street mugging and the mugger may well get exceeding lucky if does me over on the first day of my holiday when I have several thousand US dollars on me...

Anyone who makes a ridiculously blanket statement such as "petty thievery is urban Europe's favorite pasttime" and, furthermore, anyone who believes that kind of BS obviously should stay home in America where everyone has guns and, as a result, there is no crime.

Dear WB,

Wouldn't it be safer, and less expensive, to bring 2 ATM cards?

Ira

Not all countries have a wide network of ATMs with international recipricol agreements with other banks overseas. Brazil is a good example here.

In Brazil I could only withdraw cash in major cities like Rio, Sao Paulo and Salvador from ATMs. Indeed, I found was very limited by the ATMs that I could use, although the ATM situation is improving over there.

I am going to Ethiopia in a few weeks - apparently there is only one ATM there. And in Congo where I am also going there are no ATMs so you have to bring cash!

Why would it be cheaper to bring two ATM cards as opposed to cash?

As to the query to me about the hotel safe. I have never used the main safe at the hotel front desk. I never have needed it. Why bring valuables or cash that require using a safe? As for the passport comment. Make photocopies and leave them in your suitcase, or where ever. Then keep the passport in your hidden money belt whenever you leave.

I have always used in-room safes, where you set your own combination, with confidence. I leave our original passports, airline tickets, other than the one or two cards we carry about, list of credit card/phone numbers, etc., in the in-room safe.

I suppose if you're really worried about the contents vanishing, you could just take a photo.
