If you liked Grindelwald, you'll love ??? (in Bavaria)

When we were on our honeymoon last year, my hubby and I absolutely fell in love with Grindelwald and the BO region of Switzerland. We are going to Germany and Austria for two weeks at the end of this year, and would love to find a town to stay in with scenery that rivals that region of Switzerland. I realize in Bavaria that much of it will be very scenic, but can anyone point me to a specific town perhaps in the Bavarian Alps that would be nice for 2-3 nights?

Thanks.

No comparison to Grindelwald, but not bad either:

Berchtesgaden
Mittenwald
Oberstdorf

Honestly, you won't find scenery that is half as impressive as the BO anywhere in Bavaria.

We loved the Berchtesgaden. Now granted I haven't (yet) been to the BO, but we found the scenery quite beautiful. A boatride on the konigssee is magical, and there are some great hikes in the area. We love this area and are headed back in about three weeks.

The Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Also near Salzburg, Berchesgarten, and famed Hallstatt. A great location with mountains and lakes, but no mountains compare to the BO.

Thanks!! We are already planning on spending at least one night in Berchtesgaden, so maybe I will increase it to 2.

Please increase it to more than 2 nights.

Bear in mind you can make a number of day trips from there too, including the Salzkammergut area that Bob refers to...

I suggest going to other places besides the Berner Oberland to start the trip. Save the best for the last.

There are of course two theories on this approach.

One, if you go elsewhere after the Berner Oberland you will not be as thrilled, but going home is easier.

Two, if you visit the Berner Oberland last, and then go home, you may feel definite withdrawal symptoms. I am not sure which way is the best.

Last year we went to Scotland; the previous year we went to Wales AFTER the Berner Oberland. Going home was easier.

This year, Prague and then our usual abode in Lauterbrunnen and then home from Zürich.

Bob, we are not going to the BO this trip, only Germany and Austria... hopefully next year we'll get back to Switzerland!

Hi,
You say Bavaria and Austria...

Our favorite in Bavaria is Mittenwald.
A VERY close second is Ramsau (by Berchtesgaden).

In Austria...
Zell am See, Heiligenblut, Soelden, Hall in Tirol or somewhere in the Innsbruck area.

You didn't mention this, but it's very easy from Austria's Tirol... Italy's Dolomites! Truly spectacular!

Our recent photo's of these places may be of interest:
