Wow! Thank you all so much for your helpful suggestions.
Since my husband is not one to unpack an re pack, I think we will spend another day in Seville , rent a car and take day trips including granada
This is my first time using this site and did not know what to expect. Now I am hooked and have been offering my suggestions for other travels heading to Sicily, Croaia and other european destinations

Both cities are very different, but I think Granada is more attractive to me... I'm not keen on flat land and Sevilla is desperately flat !
There is a security issue in all big European, American, Asian cities... but it's a question of common sense and bad/good luck ! I usually avoid deserted area at siesta or night time in Madrid, Sevilla, Granada, Paris, or London ! and I don't carry my passeport or large amount of cash on me.
Security is not a criterium to choose between Granada and Sevilla !
Hasta luego,
Christine in Granada

Having been to both, I prefer Granda for the landscape as well as the Alhambra. However, I would also cut back a day from Madrid and visit both Seville and Granada. While I would choose Toledo over Segovia, I would also try to visit both of those small cities. With good planning, you can do all four places.

Both beautiful and wonderful.....Seville pretty special. Felt very safe on both...I went to Seville a few years ago with a girlfriend and we were out late walking about on our own with no issues.

seville. as amazing as the alahambra is, it's sort of a one site city whereas seville is a real city that is charming in so many respects. that being said, i think you could do both in 4 day. you really only need a day and a night in granada.

I would agree with what many others have said in that Granada most definitely has a more beautiful landscape, but would choose Sevilla. We took the express bus (about 3 hours) from Sevilla to Granada to see the Alhambra and spent the night, taking the bus back to Sevilla the next morning. It would have been an extremely long day trip, but doable when someone else is doing the driving!
And just a side note, I was pickpocketed in a plaza in Granada. Search my screen name if you'd like the gory details...so regardless where you go just be vigilant!
