Once more: Venice - though personally, I prefer Rome or Umbria, and it is no doubt at all that Rome has by far more important sights, plus a greater variety of sights (from antiquity to the 19th century), and even the more important sights, artistically, and is a much more lively and up-to-date city at the same time. But nevertheless, I'd say Venice, because it's simply unique. There are other places in the world with first-class art, architecture, history (though all these other cities summed up will hardly beat the number, let alone the quality of Rome's sights, but anyway...) - but you'll never again be able to see a place like Venice. It so out-of-earth, so magic, it makes you completely leave this world, this everyday life. (And yes, I know Bellagio. Wonderful landscape, nice village. But what else that I must have missed there?)

Globerunner09, I've been to both Venice and Bellagio. And also Rome, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, the Italian Riviera, the Amalfi coast, etc. I still pick Venice. It's unique in the world. And mr_go is right about Venice being photogenic.

Been to both, and many other spots in Italy as well. As have many others on this board. And yes, there is something very special about both locations, but I like Venice better.

Is this person already in love with you? If so, then I say go to Florence, as it is amazing, but only a loving couple can do it.

If you have yet to make the big gesture, I would hole up in Siena and see the city. There is not so much to focus on, so all the attention can be on you two. The food is delicious and there is no pressure to do anything.

Rome would be my first choice, followed closely by Venice. Then again, there are all the wonderful towns of Tuscany...so many choices
