Interesting! (and funny!) You got my curiosity up, so I Googled the phrase. All I could find were references that indicate it was something an American tourist asked. Oh dear - I hope the folks out there from countries full of stuff that is thousands of years old can forgive us our naivity sometimes. Well, at least whoever asked this was working at learning something, and unwittingly became famous at the same time! Anyway - thanks for increasing my literary knowledge today.

I'm no genius but reading these made me feel downright smart!

...and to clarify before I get trounced myself for saying something silly - yes, America is full of stuff that is a thousand years old too - but here in North America at least, there is not much man made that is still standing, unlike those gorgeous castles etc over there. Here you have to dig for it!

my apologies for delay in responding - busy couple days at the workplace!
Funny thought about ancient tourists asking silly questions about the pyramid (I can hear it now - "why did they put dead people in there?.....")
Indy - I looked at your link - sculpture garden looks fun, but I will say the coal mining experience sounds very neat. I used to live in the Coal minining areas of the States and was curious as to what it was like in there. This may be a great chance to find out (Stephen Fry did go down in a US coal mine as part of his documentary on the United States - it was interesting.)
Sheila - I have passed the Kenmore idea and other Scottish Highland Ideas along to my brother, who is planning that part of the trip. I've promised him hands off as to final plans for that - I'll just pass along ideas. There are four of us going and we each get a section of the trip that is "ours" - that part is his.
I do appreciate the input so very much from all of you!

P.S. ....actually, I did initially book a place near Kenmore, but cancelled it after my brother stated he really wanted to find our spot for that night. I've booked places for nearly the rest of the trip, so have to share....

I know you think I'm not all that helpful, but just a heads up -- Ft William is a dump . . . Not horrible but probably the least 'nice' town you could have picked.
Maybe look at this place instead http://www.clachaig.com/ In the scheme of things 10000% better than staying in Ft William.

Hey, all advice is helpful. Even if advice is not used, it helps give a bigger picture.
No need to apologize to me since I'm not the one who chose Ft. William. To sum up my scattered references above, this is my brother's part of the trip to choose. He has been to all the places we are going other than the Highlands, so we gave him full leeway for this part of the journey. I sent on all the suggestions from here, as well as from other sources, and this is what he chose. One thing I'm certain of is that Fort William is not the focus of the trip. The focus will be on the scenery and history around it. We will sight see until dark, drop into bed, get up early the next morning and hit the road again. I'm guessing he got a good deal on a B&B there.
It is a little bit of a nail biter. I remember when we were kids and went camping, my dad and brothers always chose the most rustic campgrounds while mom and I wanted the ones with hot showers and flush toilets. Anyway, I've picked 4 of the 7 lodgings we will be using for this trip, so I gotta' be fair! I will still pass along your input though.
