I'd like to hit some great restaurants but not interested in spending a fortune. Like around $20 a person is ok. Let's hear what you guys think. List your favorite moderately priced restaurant.

Besides a million pubs - try one of the Wagamama locations for huge bowls of noodles. (must be 20 million choices) There is a great pasta place right by Victoria Station that is suprisingly cheap. Try the India Club on the Strand for some good Indian lunches. I don't know the name of it, but on the east side of the Queensway restaurant row is a Lebanese place we ate at about 3-4 years ago that was darn cheap and they served a plate of hummus about 6 inches high. There's alot of turn over in that area, so don't know if they're still there.

Hi hartlyn,

All over London are Indian and other ethnic restaurants with good food in your budget range.

I recommend you get a copy of Harden's "Cheap Eats in London" for some excellent recommendations

hardens.com or amazon, or any good bookshop when you get here.

We found the Duke of York pub across from Victoria Station very reasonable with good-sized portions and tasty food.

We had a most delicious paella with Spanish wine in a tapas restaurant off Oxford St near the Marble Arch, very reasonable!

Also enjoyed the Duke of York restaurant upstairs (not the pub downstairs) and the restaurant upstairs at the Red Lion on Parliament Road.

999,950 pubs serve dud food, made in a factory and reheated. 50 pubs serve good food, and it is some of these that I list.

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned Belgo Centraal (or one of the other Belgo's) which is a constant recommendation here -- and deservedly so. Great not only for their mussels and chips, but also for their wonderful sausages, chicken, and other things. Although you'll have to be careful on the beer ordering not to go way over your budget. The best deal is to go early evening, when you get mussels, frites, and beer for the "time". In other words if it's 5:30 you pay 5.30 pounds!

I really like Savoir Faire, at 42 New Oxford Street in Bloomsbury. Great food and terrific value.

I suspect that hartlyn was looking for more detailed comments like Patrick's.

True, Keith, but where is he staying? Is it worth going all the way across town just to find a "great" neighborhood restaurant?

Some of the rest of us following the thread may be staying on that other side of town

Two of my favorites in addition to the ones already mentioned are Strada (great pizza from a woodfired oven) and Nando Chickenland (portuguese grilled chicken with a spicy flavor). Both are in your price range and both are chains with locations all around central London.

And I've said it before on other threads, but I'll say it again here. We really like Pizza Express. (It's much nicer in atmosphere than the name implies, with good wood-fired pizza, and like Strada, has restaurants all around town.)

I also second Belgo Centraal. If you want to spend more money there, the desserts are worth a splurge!

I like Pizza Express also, but probably the best for me would be the Indian restaurant Noor Jahan not far from the Gloucester tube.

I hope Ben's list is good as all of the pub food I've had has been nauseating.

Christina,

Have you been to Bombay Brassiere? It is also near Gloucester tube. I would be interested in your comparison of the two Indian restaurants.
