Iberia Airlines...are they really that bad?

I am sure that you will get a myriad of answers, most of them on the bad side, probably. I had one bad and one good experience with them.

I was scheduled to leave Madrid at 12 pm on the way to Mexico City. The plane was 4 hours late for no discernible reason. They paid for lunch at the airport, and from the very beginning they said that the plane would leave at 4, but without any further explanations. Believe me that you don't want to be waiting in an airport for more than 4 hours when you are about to take a 12 hour flight. The plane was packed. Full of high school kids making a lot of noise, no place to lie down and impossible to sleep.

On the way back, the plane left just on time, people were very friendly at the airport and on the plane, the plane was half full (maybe even less) and I slept all the way like a baby.

Maybe you'll have a good experience, maybe not... who knows?

I've flown Iberia from Miami to New York to Madrid and Barcelona 3 times and found the service to be wonderful and the food delicious. Never a late flight. There are always English speaking flight attendants on those flights. I found that they have great inexpensive special fares from within Spain also to places like canary islands and Mallorca. Wish I had had more time to travel.

I had originally posted this thread on 5/1/2001 and have since flown with Iberia. I had no problems whatsoever with this airline and will definitely fly with them in the future. I booked round trip international tickets to fly with them from Chicago to Barcelona as well as from Barcelona to Paris. No problems at all with the six flights I had with them.
