Iberia has excellent service. I used them for a trip to Madrid in March. The pilots were skillful, the staff were professional and extremely courteous. The only surprise was that they allow smoking on their flights from the US to Spain. On the way over, the smokers were in the front of the plane, which meant lots of smoke for us non-smokers in the back. On the return trip, I was in the middle of the smoking section because, although I arrived at the airport 3 hours before the flight, all the non-smoking seats were taken by people connecting from other flights.

Have flown Iberia twice.. first time, shame on Iberia, second time..shame on me! Allows smoking, many flights miss connections. Rude with passengers who have been inconvenienced. Iberia puts displaced passengers up in poor accommodations.

There's nothing that I'm looking forward to more than spending 8 hours breathing in second hand smoke. Do you have any recommendations on how to not have this happen to me??

Jeanie,
How long are you going to be in Europe?
8 hours in a plane is just a warm-up for ingesting second-hand smoke.

Wendy,
I'm aware of the smoke I will inhale once in Europe, I studied abroad there and have traveled extensively. yet somehow it still seems worse on a plane where they pump out air (and not very much of it). I guess there's also the being trapped on the airplane thing. About 6 years ago I flew Lufthansa and the person next to me was smoking up a storm, thank God it was a short flight. I just don't want to start off my trip on a bad note.

Iberia is having a work slow-down right now. Many connecting flights are either cancelled or delayed causing passengers lots of problems. ( My friends were stranded for three days sans luggage in April.) Ask your travel agent about it or call Iberia for details. ( I know there was a SMALL article in Sunday's LA TIMES TRAVEL section about it. If I can find it, I'll email it to you.)

Iberia is canceling 6% of its flights (about 77 per day) during the summer season. Call 800-772-4642 for more information. This mostly affects connecting flights. (LA TIMES, MAY 2, 1999 TRAVEL, page L4)
