There seems to be a difference between flying Iberia from the US (did it once and would rather not do it again) and within Spain. We have flown Iberia several times between Madrid and Malaga and had no problems.
Kay, I don't think you should worry about your flight out of Barcelona. Have a great time in Spain!

jeri, all others things being equal -- and it certainly doesn't look like that is NOT the case -- you would still be better off on Northwest because that airline will be more useful to you going forward. Before you pull the trigger on your ticket, join WorldPerks and get a number to enter into your record (if you are not already a member):

http://www.nwa.com/features/wpchoices.html

Then go through the rest of the promotions on their website and sign up for anything that might possibly apply to you with your new WorldPerks number. Leverage that long-haul ticket into a jump-start on future bennies. Happy Contrails!

Iberia is partnered with American - in fact the direct Chicago-Madrid flight is a codeshare between the two, but it is Iberia's plane and staff.

I've flown Iberia a half-dozen times, and while I don't like them, I lived to tell abut it. Strangely, the best airline meal I ever had was on Iberia's Athens-Madrid flight. (wine, pate, smoked fish, salad, cheese, beef stew - for lunch in coach!)

Northwest, I believe, is not a direct flight Chicago-Madrid. That is what makes the difference to me.
