If we’re doing a road trip travelling on secondary or tertiary roads and focusing primarily on scenery, we’ll do a string of one or two nighters. We won’t be putting a lot of kilometres on each day, and stop when something has caught our fancy and have a poke about.

We travel light, and don’t often start before 9:30-10, and stop by late afternoon. But after two or three weeks my husband has had enough of driving in a foreign country, and it makes no difference whether we’ve had a series of short stops or a series of longer stays.

That really is the key: to have your arrival and exits timed to the tee, to have your hotel drop easy and simple. You arrive by super comfy train (buy up to a nice seat - - they can be really reasonable when booked in advance), and within 20 minutes of getting into town you check in, drop your stuff, and head out. Experience the town intensely for a couple days, then an easy stroll to the station for another super comfy, relaxing, train ride. Plan your days and timings to relaxed departures, easy arrivals, and the rest is gravy.
