Cancellation update from me, the OP:
It's been eight days since we canceled our trip. My DD is still ill at home with a cold, congestion and stuffy ears after a week. DH feeling better but still has a cough. Other daughter has something coming on but we are keeping fingers crossed! All are relieved that they've been sick at home rather than a hotel room.
And me, disappointed about missing Paris but at least I finished up a few home projects sitting over my head. I painted some wood trim in a couple of rooms and got my DD's bedroom remodel nearly finished.

Just came from Paris and we had the same concerns. American media report only the crashed flights, or the terrorist activity, not the millions and millions that go about their business every day.
we felt COMPLETELY safe in Paris. Their is heightened security, department stores have someone looking in bags at the entrances, the museums have scanners like the airport. You would think that would make you more nervous, but we got used to it in about a day and it really made me feel better.
The police that roam are professional and astute.
I'm so glad we went, it was my dream, and it was amazing.

The media tend to focus on the sensational and the ugly, and it is very understandable since no matter what people claim they want, every "good news" paper has gone out of business very rapidly.
We all need to feel a bit superior, so anything that can cause us to cluck with dismay at what is happening in another country and feel that our own country is better consoles us.

Recently read tourism in France is down 11%, but not by Americans.
During our 3 week stay in Paris in June, the main hazard was overly exuberant crowds of Eurocup fans. However, presence of riot police ready to roll was notable. Metro stop closures were caused by union demonstrations protesting "le loi travail" and bus stop closures around the Eiffel tower "fan zone".
Tolerance of perceived risk is individual.

I do have a question to address to the OP.
"<i>I cancelled our family trip to Paris</i>" -- was this a decision on behalf of all family members without consulting them, or did you take a vote? Your follow-up post made it seem like nobody really cared about going in the first place since they were all sick.
And since you also mentioned that you live in Europe, I would like to know in which country you feel so much safer than in France or Belgium.

I was planning a trip to Florida but due to the terrorism in Orlando and the zika virus in Southern Florida and the muggings in Tampa and the predominance of guns in the States, I have decided to go to France instead - seems a lot safer.

Hello All,
I live in France and I plan to me move elsewhere. Don't expect any kind of security here, jails are full and thousands of radical islamists listed as dangerous are free in the street in france and the justice of this country refuses to put them in jail before they perpetrate a terrorist act so they are in wait and lets happen mode. Great method indeed! A tourist bus was robbed by a group of 30 persons with tourists inside of the bus in the center of paris. How do you want to feel safe. Go to
Guatemala, it's safer.

Good move Jack.
Not sure you'll be missed by many people in France though.
Reading your post, I'm glad you'll be gone and I won't run into you.
Before you leave, be sure to get your membership to the FN.
