Hydrofoil from Mykonos to Santorini

We need to travel from Mykonos to Santorini via ferry, hydrofoil, etc. Can we arrange our hydrofoil service once we arrive in Mykonos or do we have to reserve a spot? How are the hyrdrofoils? What's better, hydrofoil or ferry? Please advise. Thanks!

Billy,

We went from Mykonos to Santorini in May 2000 via hydrofoil and ferry. Back then, for some reason, it was impossible to book advance reservations so we book them directly in Mykonos.

Also, there was no direct transportation as we had to stop in Naxos first. We took a hydrofoil directly from Mykonos to Naxos (about 1 hour)and a ferry from Naxos to Santorini (about 2 hours).

What I can tell you for sure is that YOU SHOULD BOOK A FERRY INSTEAD OF A HYDROFOIL TO GET TO SANTORINI (Whether it is from Naxos,Mykonos or any other island). Arriving to Santorini by ferry will be one of the most exciting things you will do in your entire life. As you slowly approach Santorini by ferry you will be awestruck by the sheer beauty and grandness of Santorini. Make sure that you get a chair and get a good viewing position in the front deck.

Good luck.

Carlos,
Why book a ferry instead of hydrofoil? They both arrive at the same spot don't they?

A ferry has open decks where you can stroll around and look at the islands. Not much to see from a seat in a hydrofoil.

Not only that XXX but the hydrofoil is so fast that even if you can get a decent viewing spot you will not be able to get good pictures or slowly savor the arrival into Santorini's caldera, a true spectacle.

As a greek, let me tell you, the ferries have good view but are disgusting & filthy. Go by the Hellas flying dolphin.. hydrofoil... that's my advice.

Hi,

I disagree about going by hydrofoil. In a hydrofoil you are inside and cannot see out of the windows because of the ocean spray. They are not very nice inside. The ferries are ferries, some are cleaner than others, but you can be outside and enjoying the sun and the views. Go for the ferry.

Billy,

After readinng all the messages you might be a tad confused. Let me settle your confusion if I can.

The modern hydrofoils are fantastic. I swear they look like something out of a James Bond flick. They are the faster and more convenient form of transportation. They are also very comfortable. As such they are a much preferred mode of transportation when compared to the old ferries.

HOWEVER, TO ARRIVE TO SANTORINI YOU MUST TAKE THE FERRY. TRUST ME. THE VIEWS FROM THE FERRY ARE SO MUCH SUPERIOR THAN THAT OF A HYDROFOIL IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE OUTWEIGH A 1000 to 1 THE NEGATIVES OF TRAVELLING BY FERRY.

I would fly. You can make a reservation and save hours of travel time. Then you can take a boat to Therasia and get the same views.
