Hut Shoes

In the process of packing for our July hut-to-hut trip with my husband and four kids (ages 5,6,7,9) and am confused about what kind of footwear to pack for in the huts. I read somewhere our hiking shoes are not allowed inside? Should I pack Teva-type sandals for everyone, or flip-flops, or what? Thanks!

While I have not done a hut-to-hut hike, I have lived in Germany and know that they are quite particular about indoor/outdoor shoes. (My kids had to have special non-athletic shoes to wear in the gym at the German school they attended and we had to change out of our "outdoor" sneakers into "indoor" sneakers for the indoor tennis club we frequented.)

That being said, I think any shoe you would wear exclusively indoors at home would be suitable, including bedroom slippers. They don't want dirt brought into the huts, so whatever shoes you wear inside the hut, don't go outside in them too.

The traditional "hut shoe" ("Hüttenschuh") is actually a knitted sock with a leather sole sewn underneath - lightweight and easy to pack, which matters for a hut-to-hut hike where every gram of luggage counts. But any warm slippers will do, or ABS socks, or light slippers plus a pair of warm socks. You will need something that keeps the feet warm, so flipflops alone are not a god idea.

Teva-type sandals will be worn outdoors at other times, they do not qualify as indoor shoes.

Totes slipper socks might be a good answer.

The bottoms have a rubberized patern on them that is non-slip and more durable than plain socks.
