Kerouac, that is something to consider. Paris in a well-connected residential area might be an excellent alternative and more to DH's liking.
Finding a (legal) apartment might be more of a challenge, I imagine.
Thanks to all for the ideas and links!

I would start in Nice/Provence, then fly to Paris to spend my finally week in France. Nothing like spending a week in France. Have a great time!
"In my part of Paris, most hotels cost around 40-50 euros a night."
Tell us more about these hotels?

I do think Paris' hotel rates are not bad compared to some other capital cities, like London. But I do think most tourists know that you can always get much cheaper hotels in any big city in areas where you may not want to be or that are inconvenient. And you can always get real cheap hotels in most places, it's just what level of hotel you want to stay in on your vacation. But I still think hotels are cheaper in other cities in France, for comparable accommodations.

Given the timing of your visit, I would spend some time in Paris - one week- then head south: Provence and the Cote D'Azur, possibly breaking up the journey with a few days in Burgundy.
I echo DebitNM's comment, that October is a lovely time in the South of France.

Yes, what neighborhoods are there are 40-50 euros a night in Paris?
I'm planning a similiar trip myself, for next spring, and was thinking of about 10 days in Paris (including day trips)5-6 days in Provence, and the rest around Nice and Italian Riviera, or Dordogne).

I would spend at least one week in Bretagne.
One week in Paris I can't get enough of this city.
I confirm you can sleep in Ker neighborhood for cheap but I raised my budget to about 70 80
I would skip French Riviera and spend one week in Dordogne.
From there Vendee based in La Rochelle.
Anyway can t get much wrong in France.

Deb, Luberon is in my short list as well! After using my 89 days in Valencia we can come back on October 6th. But we should be back home before Thanksgiving.
Thanks to all for sharing.
