How to get from Rome to Perugia?

We'll be flying into Rome then heading directly to Perugia. Usually we would take the train, but the next departure to Perugia is several hours after we land in Rome.

We prefer not to drive ourselves (jet lag is a killer!), so does anyone know how feasible/possible it would be to hire a car to drive us there?

The timetable on www.bahn.de shows lots of trains to Perugia.

I find that hard to believe--when do you land?

Would one of the buses leaving directly from Fiumicino fit your schedule?

We land in Rome at 8:50 a.m. (hopefully!). The Trenitalia schedule shows a train leaving at 11:14, so I guess it's not that long, but we'd prefer to get our trip underway ASAP instead of hanging around FCO.

Frankly, I rather doubt that you'll make that 11:14 out of Roma Termini if you land at 8:50 ("hopefully", as you say).

If you land at 8:50, I can't imagine you'd reach the train station at FCO earlier than 9:30, probably only possible if you don't check luggage.

This means you will miss the 9:37 Leonardo Express to Roma Termini.

The next departure is 10:07, and arrives at Termini 30 minutes later.

This gives you perhaps 30 minutes until the 11:14 departure to Perugia, which is a comfortable amount of time to find you way to your departure track, perhaps grab a coffee.

I agree with Zelina that there's a reasonable chance that you won't make the 11:14 if you've checked luggage and there's a delay.

There's another way to go from Fiumicino to Perguia, although I've only done this once and in the opposite direction.

There is train service from Fiumicino to Orte. The route goes to Trastevere and Tiburtina and on to Orte. It does not stop at Roma Termini. In Orte, you change to a Perguia-bound train which possibly started from Roma Termini.

This train is not listed on the Trenitalia website because it is part of Roma Metropolitana. The route is FM1 (sometimes called FR1). You can find the timetable at www.adr.it. Click on English, "getting here" then "trains" and "metropolitan train." What the site doesn't tell you is that the train takes about an hour or perhaps 65 minutes.

I haven't plotted this all out to see if it saves you any time, but I thought I'd just mention the possibility. It does offer the chance to avoid Termini and see some different scenery if you've already taken the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino.

I agree with the others. You won't be "hanging around" the airport. You'll pass through passport control, waiting to collect your luggage, and if you are smart, you'll grab your first morning cappuccino in the airport (they are excellent there). If you take the express train to Termini, you well may be rushing to make that train to Perugia, but you could take a taxi to Termini, which may be faster.

Oh, and you are banking on the fact that your flight lands absolutely on time.
