How to get from Pompeii to Amalfi..
Hi everyone,
I am planning a trip to Naples and the Amalfi coast in early June. We will fly into Naples and spend a few nights there before heading down to Amalfi via Pompeii. I understand you can take the train to Pompeii from Naples -- but my question is how do we get from Pompeii to Amalfi? Is it easier to go back to Naples and spend the night there, then train from Naples to Amalfi the following day?
Thanks for your help

There is a local train from Pompeii to Sorrento. It takes about 30 minutes. From Sorrento, you would either take the SITA bus to Amalfi or better yet, a boat from the port in Sorrento. The trip by boat from Sorrento to Amalfi takes about an hour.

We did that same trip from Positano to Pompeii and back last year - SITA bus to Meta as I recall, then the train to Pompeii, same again to get back. As Weadles suggests though, the boat trip from Sorrento to Amalfi would be far more scenic.

Hi ilp,
You can:
Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and ferry to Amalfi
Circumvesuviana to Meta or Sorrento and SITA bus along the coast road to Amalfi
Circumvesuviana to Naples, ferry to Naples
Circumvesuviana to Naples, train to Salerno, ferry or SITA bus to Amalfi
I'd take the first method.
Enjoy your visit.

Is it Amalfi town you want or just the Amalfi coast? If the former and for any of the towns along the coast, you can do as Ira says except maybe for suggestion #3, which should read Circumvesuviana (commuter train) to Naples, ferry to Amalfi.
For the ferries you have to get from the train station to the port. And the ferry schedule depends on the time of year and the weather.

Thank you for all your suggestions. We think we will now do the following:
Day 1: Fly into Naples - overnight there.
Day 2: Day trip to Pompei and then back to Naples to overnight.
Day 3: Explore Naples then take late train / bus to Amalfi (town)
Then we are spending 4 days in Amalfi, doing day trips to other locations on the Amalfi coastline.
So now I just have one more question.. What's the easiest (and cheapest) way to get to Amalfi from Naples?
Thanks again!

Hi ilp,
I would take the train from Naples to Salerno and the ferry to Amalfi.
Ferry is about 3 blks from the train station.
For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):
