How to access an international operator using a cell phone in Europe

Does anyone know how to access an international operator using a cell phone to make a collect call from Italy?

I don't know that but when I was there on a girl trip, we needed to call home often, we went to a small store that sold phone cards, it worked from all our hotels throughout Italy and is so cheap.

I don't know the answer to that, but if you have a cell phone that works in Italy, why would you need to make a collect call?

Thank you for your replies.

My sister's husband is hospitalized in Sicily, and she has had to contact her travel insurance company numerous times. They don't have a free number; she must call collect but cannot access an international operator using her cell phone to do so. She now calls them and asks them to call her back.

Maybe this is what you want to know:

Operator Services
To make a reverse charge (collect) call, dial 170 for the international operator in Italy.

gramzy1 - That' s what I did when I need to contact the insurance company from my cell - had them call me back. Plus I put in the cell charges as part of my insurance claim as those minutes were used up when I was on hold or a couple of times when it was inconvenient to wait for them to call me back.....now am waiting for the ins. co. to pay my claim....

Thanks to all of you for replying. My sister finally found a number which worked on her Vodophone SIM card from Italy. It is 800-172-444.
