"The one-way fare for the ACTV (PHONE: 041/5287886, www.actv.it) water bus is EUR3.10 on all lines (return EUR5.15). A 24-hour tourist ticket costs EUR9.30, a three-day ticket EUR18.08, and a seven-day ticket EUR31; these are especially worthwhile if you are planning to visit the islands. Groups of three to five people traveling together are eligible for reduced fares (ask for the biglietto famiglia)."
Sounds as if fares may have gone up since this information was posted by Fodors. As with any pass, it's only a good deal if you use it a lot. I walked nearly everywhere in Venice, so it wouldn't have been good value for me.

Sorry don't know the current single ticket price.
I only used the vaporetto to get from the train station to my hotel, and return to train station, plus one ride on the Grand Canal, so I'm sure the pass would not have been a good deal for me.
As already mentioned above, and like any pass, depends on how many times you're going to use it. I was most always on foot and in the central area.

The website for ACTV, which operates the vaporetti says it's 3.50 Euros for a single ticket (or 1.80 Euros for the so-called "traghetto" fare that takes you only one stop across the Grand Canal). It also says that the 3-day pass costs 22.00 Euros, so unless the website is extremely outdated, either JandaO was given incorrect information or the dollar is in MUCH worse shape than we thought!
Here's the web page (in English):

Lesli, unfortunately those fares are now outdated. The main fares for non-residentes are now as follows:
-EUR5,00 on a line that goes through the Grand Canal, valid for 90 minutes
-EUR3,50 for all other lines
-24-hour ticket: EUR10,50
-3-day ticket: EUR22,00
Plus a lot of other confusing fares...
Which means that since most tourists go through the Canal Grande, they'll pay EUR5,00 for a single trip. Not exactly cheap!
