How many times have you revisited your favorite city...

... and when/how did you first fall in love with it?

Do you have a hard time choosing between going back and going somewhere new?

I can't count the number of times I have been to New York. When/how? I think it was running up and down the stairs in Stuyvesant Town when I learned to walk.

Oh, Europe, well never mind.

Went to Paris for the first time in 1958 and have been there 12 times since. It's always number 1 on my list of where to go. At home, New York is my favorite city and I've been there well over 30 times (I live on the West Coast). The older I get, the more tempting it is to return to favorite places. When I was younger, I couldn't understand why people would not want to go somewhere new on each trip.

Hi all,

I attended boarding school in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1968.

I went back in 1995, and since then I've been back nine times, with a two-month stay in an apartment coming up. I can't get enough!

I love Rome despite the noise, grit, etc. I am so lucky to be able to fly there almost everyweek for work and it still takes my breath away when I see all of the ruins as we are coming in on the bus! OR maybe its just the great red wine and calamari??????

I've been to London eight times, with Trip No. 9 planned for the end of September.

I first went in 1980, but I fell in love with it through books going back to childhood; e.g., Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and graduating to Shakespeare, Dickens, et. al., but with a strong preference to good English murder mysteries. One of my favorite places in my favorite city is the British Library.

I'm not a city girl so I don't have a favourite. I try to avoid them as much as possible.

I also love Paris and NYC, but I'm just as crazy about Key West, although on a smaller scale and in an entirely different way. I've lived in the Keys for many years and I really appreciate the history of this little island. Every street, every house has it's own story to tell, and I have spent many years getting to know them all. Over time we have become a part of each other.

London, Paris and Hongkong. Every year I go to these cities twice a year. Can't get it out of my system.

Venice and London, each three times. Paris six times. I live in California. If I lived closer I'd go more frequently.

We have been to Hallstatt, Austria 4 times and I always look forward to going back. After the tour buses leave, it is the most magical place. We first visited in 1999 on the recommendation of a neighbor and it was love at first sight! In September, however, we have decided to try St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee to see how it compares to our beloved Hallstatt.

We have also been to Lucerne about 6 times and will again go back on our next trip to Switzerland. We first visited Lucerene over 20 years ago when we lived in Austria. While we have only been to the Berner Oberland area twice, I know we will definitely return. The views there are beyond definition.

We first saw Rothenberg ob der Tauber in 1983 when we lived in Vienna. We have returned on every subsequent trip to Europe even if just for a few hours. Again, once the tour buses leave for the day, it is the most wonderful place.

On each trip, we try to incorporate at least one of our favorite places. It always feels comfortable, like putting on your favorite pair of jammies.

Paris - 6 times and planning the next trip. I fell in love with it because it felt like I was home, even though I have never lived there.

Paris - 71, maybe 72...losing count.

First visit was in 1973 or 1974 (losing count of that too). I distinctly remember as the plane flew in low for landing at CGD thinking I was "coming home." Still can't explain that, but it was a very powerful feeling at the time.

No, I don't have a hard time choosing. I know I'll always be going back to Paris, so choosing to go other places in addition to it is just fun!

Paris! We almost always end our trips there. It is easy to fly back home from CDG, so we almost always arrive back in Paris a couple of days before our flight back to the States. We have spent weeks there in the past, so we hit the spots we like and a new place or two when we return.

First time in Paris was as a 17 year-old in 1995. I studied there for one month. I have been back five times since, but will be unable to return until 2009.

Luzern, we went there on our honeymoon in 1975, fell in love with it upon coming out of the train station and seeing the lake, river and covered bridges and have returned five of the six subsequent trips we've taken to Europe.

Paris! Stoped counting. Strolling through Luxemburg gardens in the morning is the best feeling in the word (even in February!). I fell in love with Paris long before I had a chance to see it in person; every chance I get -- Paris is #1 on my list!

I haven't traveled all that much (in comparison to most people on this board). So, I can't pick one favorite, because I am still exploring.

But to answer your second question, I do find it hard to choose on returning or going somewhere new. I have this list of places I want to go, but I'd like to forget about that list and really get to know one area. It's always wonderful to return to a place and know the place to get the best sandwiches... best picnic spots... the shop owner greets you with a smile as they recognize your face... It's a moment when you have become a visitor and not just a tourist.

If I only I had the time and money....

We visited Rome for the first time in February of 04. I fell in love with it from the minute we arrived and have now visited 3 times. I still have a list of things I want to see there but have decided to do more traveling before I return.
