Ann - perhaps we should start a new thread on this aspect. I agree the atmosphere seems to vary from one NT place to another and it's not specific to one part of the country or another.
By way of example, we recently visited Polesden Lacey in Surrey, which is set up as it would have been during an Edwardian house party, complete with gramophone records belting out the records of the day and items of clothing and letters strewn across the beds - it's as if you've been trasported back in time and the house guests have just stepped out of the building for a short while: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/polesden-lacey/ I can see how this sort of thing upsets some of the more snooty NT traditionalists, but I personally find it much more appealing and interesting than the traditional approach.

Maybe because of the warm summer weekend or something. But I've never had to park very far down the road and the house comes immediately into view. Was the parking a mess due to crowds?
Annhig - don't cross it off so quickly? My last visit they had a 'putting Waddesdon to bed for the season' tour that explained all they go through to preserve the art/artifacts and sht down for the season, inclufding quite a bit of behind the scenes places'-stuff'.

jj - i was perhaps being a little flippant. I should like to see the gardens - they did an item about the carpet bedding there on Gardener's World not that long ago.
gordon - interesting what you say about Polesden Lacy. though we lived reasonably near there for nearly 20 years, I have to confess we never went.
another place to add to the growing list!
