Sorry, mixing it up with the Barony.

And, yes, the Golden Rule (Too much sun, not enough sleep)

Just a follow up and another thanks: We've settled on our itinerary:

3 nights London
Virgin 1st class train with Western scenary
1 night Glasgow
4 nights Edinburgh
GNR 1st class train with Eastern scenary
2 nights London

A city trip, clearly, but we plan on a day trip one of our Edinburgh days (although it could be back to Glagow; depends on the weather).

The older I get the more I realize that you have to plan a trip on the assumption that you'll be back, and not focus on all that you're "missing."

We're looking forward to the other-side-of-the-coin trip that we'll hopefully take in the near future (touring the Scottish and English countryside, preferably for longer than 10 nights and in late spring ). But for now 10 nights going to museums, theaters, galleries, restaurants, pubs, etc., and getting a taste of a couple of new cities is sounding pretty grand.

Looking forward to trying out your suggestions.

Jim

On the off chance that you don't already have your plane tickets, consider an open jaws flight: into London and out of Glasgow or vice versa. That way you don't spend two days on the train and checking into and out of hotels. On a short trip you're spending a lot of time retracing your steps. (An open jaws ticket need not cost much more than a simple round trip ticket.)

We would have done an open jaw except that:

1) United doesn't fly to Glasgow, and my wife is using a free ticket,

2) I didn't want to give up the extra inches we'll have due to my FF status on United (any United Flyertalkers will know what I mean by 21H&J, which we have booked both directions).

3) even if we flew a partner airline (e.g, BMI), there aren't any nonstops from Glasgow to SFO, and I prefer not to have to change planes when flying home, especially from overseas, and

4) we have reasons to be in London on both ends of the trip.

Not that we didn't seriously consider it.

Thanks for the suggestion.
