I think the cruise ship industry would go out of business if going to Venice for one day didn't strike millions of travelers as a sensible thing to do. Many do come back later because they felt it wasn't enough, however.

DickieG,

Where on earth were you in the states that you got a restaurant bill with service included? (By the way, I wasn't suggesting you weren't stunned by Venice. Just telling you that your belief that any human being in the world would be stunned is a belief without foundation. I'm sure many people are stunned by Venice and of course people love it and return and return. But not everybody is the same. I like Chicago.)

I agree with your aversion to the well worn path, just think that in the case of Venice it is a path worth following.
