How long does it take to drive Galway to Dingle?

From a previous post I learned that you can only go about 35 MPH in this area. So how long should I count on it taking to drive from Galway to Dingle and is it on the way to see the Cliffs of Mohler? Thank you

Hi Dottie, we drove from Dingle to Galway in August. It was about 4 hours with the ferry ride, We stopped for a quick lunch along the way. It was not an easy trip with the winding roads and all, some patches were straight through however. The Cliffs could be a stop, but I would suggest staying near Galway, and doing a day trip.
Judy

Thanks Judy
So, if we stayed in Galway the night before, we could get up early and drive to the Cliffs of Molher and on to Dingle before dark. Correct? Did you stay in a B&B in Galway? One that you would recommend? Thanks!
Dottie

Hi Dottie, we stayed at the Atlantic Heights B&B near Salthill. The owners were wonderful(all our B&B's in Ireland were wonderful IMO). The Cliffs were gorgeous, and it was not raining either! When we went for our day trip to the Cliffs and Burren, we spent a half day there. FYI, Judy

If you are driving from Galway to Dingle, don't forget to stop and pick some berries along the way. Also, take the time to smell the Derry air.

Dottie

Galway to Cliffs 1.5 hrs

Cliffs to Killimer N67 2hrs

Killimer to Tarbert Ferry leaves on te hour and takes about a half hour to cross

Tarbert to Dingle quick way (via Tralee and Castlemaine) 2.5 hrs (save Conor Pass for the next day.

You don't say when you are going but right now days are short -- sunlight between 9:30 and 4:00 so might be alot to do during the day with icy roads. If summer no problem since long hours of daylight.

John... Derry Air --- not on this drive
I posted to fast and forgot to ask about Conor Pass. I heard it was very dangerous. Is this correct?

Hi Dottie:

The Connor Pass is not for the Faint of Heart! It is a spectacular climb up and over the pass. The road is very narrow and can get dicey if there are two large vehicles passing in opposite directions. That being said it was one of the highlights of my trip to Dingle! Just be careful and do not attempt it if they are expecting heavy cloud cover!
JOHN

Hi Dottie:

It took us about 3.5 hours. However three months after we got back we rec'd a speeding ticket. I guess they have that technology where they take a photo of your license and send a ticket in the mail. It was quite a surprise so I guess maybe the legal spedd limit would place you at about 4-4.5 hours. It is a beautiful drive. Watch out for stray sheep in the road.

It's doable, but a long day. We left Dingle on a September morn, skipped the Connor Pass, went via Auchil to Tralee, got briefly lost in Tralee. Took the Tarbet ferry. (Sorry if my spellings are wrong; it's been a few months.) If you have a good map, there is a sort of a shortcut on minor roads from the ferry which brings you out at Quilty. Saves about 16 miles. We had a bit of food in Quilty. Seemed like the slowest going was from there to the Cliffs. The roads were pretty winding. Then we drove through the Burren to Moran's Oyster Bar for an early dinner. You can definitely skip Moran's. Food was good; service was non-existent. Took confusing small roads to Craughwell -- our destination for the night. We probably arrived around 6pm. Note: doing this route one is not far from Gort and some of the Lady Gregory and Yeats' landmarks just south of there. If it's sunny, the Cliffs are definitely worth seeing.

Dottie - can't remember how long it took us for the drive but have you thought of staying in a castle instead of a B&B? We stayed at Cregg Castle which was 9 miles north of Galway. A lovely old castle built in 1648 on 165 acres, run as a B&B with beautiful grounds, old cemetery, and charming hosts - Anne Marie & Patrick who are traditional Irish musicians. They sometimes entertain with musical evenings and we were fortunate that both nights we were there that they did. Nice music in front of the peat burning fireplace in the great room, by candlelight. I think the town they are in is called Carrendulah or something like that. Web site is indigo.ie/~creggcas. The price range is 25 to 35 punts and we enjoyed our stay there very much. It's not a perfectly restored castle or anything like that - sort of reminded me of a lovely manor house with real people living in it.

My guess is that John was making a vague reference to Danny Boy, which is also known as (it pains me to write this), The Londonderry Air. But to John's credit, he called it the Derry Air. Nothing really to do with any of the postings here.

Actually I think John was making a pun on smelling the 'Derry air'--or 'derriere'! Perhaps it's a dog joke???

John, I will remember that the Conner is not for the faint of heart and I'm pretty much of a wimp! Barb, THREE months later?? We will also remember to do the speed limit. Gayle, we will be driving the opposite of what you did! But the same amount of fun! Sandra, I read about Gregg Castle, is it worth it or is there another castle that is better? John......Derry Air, crack of Dawn...Good one!!
