Easy to get there by train--about an hour.
Here is a ferry map; whether they run from those two destinations depends on the season; see Line 5.

I based in SML - a lovely lovely seaside town and working port where the day's catch is still caught and day tripped to the Cinque Terre - it was an easy commute. I thought i remember the train station being right in SML but bobthenavigator would know better than i in this regard.
We are talking about Santa Maria Ligare (sp?), right?

The CT towns are not far apart.
From SML to Riomaggiore, the town furthest from SML, takes from just under an hour to about an hour and a quarter by direct train, depending on the time.
The train station in SMl is within walking distance of the center for all but the mobility impaired. For the latter, taxis are readily available.
