How far are things in Rome, REALLY?
Friends-

i haven't been to Rome in 30 years, and memories fade. half the things I read, here and elsewhere, talk about things being 5 minutes form the Trevi Fountain, 15 min from the Vatican and 10 from the Spanish Steps. others warn about being places being "FAR away", "poorly located", etc. Can I ask a few of you {OK, you CAN peek] to honestly try to answer the following, and i'll collate and post the results if you'd like.

Walking time, I feel, at a comfortable (not New Yorker, not geriatric) pace from
1-Piazza Navona to the Colloseum __________
2-Trevi Fountain to Spanish Steps___________
3-Vatican (St. Peters, near side)to Trevi___
4-Piazza del popolo to Piazza Venezia_______

Thanks!
Steve

Just got back from Rome. When you first look at the map everything looks like a long distance. I found it to be easy to walk anywhere. I walked from the Vatican to the Spannish steps in a short amount of time. Going from St Peters to the Pantheon was real easy.

I just got back from Rome in mid-June. Walking at my pace (average to brisk) with no stops:

1-Piazza Navona to the Colloseum ______25 min.
2-Trevi Fountain to Spanish Steps_______ 10 min.
3-Vatican (St. Peters, near side)to Trevi___35 min.
4-Piazza del popolo to Piazza Venezia____25 min.

This is based on approximately 5 minutes for every quarter mile (or about 3 miles an hour). Hope that helps.

Hi Steve. I can't give you any specific times for those four segments but what I can do is give you a specific time for another segment and perhaps that, in conjunction with a map, might be of some help. We had to be at a restaurant at the Spanish Steps by 8:00 and we left the south end of Piazza Navona at exactly 7:40 (after missing a bus.) Walking *somewhat* briskly, with no stops, we made it to the restaurant exactly at 8:00, so 20 minutes for that particular segment.

I would say that youve gotten some accurate estimates here. Basically, if youre in good health, and like to walk, you can walk all over the city, and hop busses, cabs, or the metro when you feel like it.

However... if youre like me and are easily distracted by fountains, shops, bars and architecture, it could take you an hour to move 2 blocks! Have a ball, and dont forget to wander aimlessly...

- Alice
