There are a ton of flights from Rome to Venice. Maybe you'd rather reschedule your trip to utilize Fiumicino Airport. Flight time is a little over an hour with flights starting at 6:50 am. Opodo might help:

But I'm sure others on this site know if some of the cheaper carriers might fly from FCO or even Ciampino.

Andre- we are flying in to Venice and spending four nights there. We can't change that because we will be meeting my aunt who is driving in from Slovenia.
So far my thinking is:
Four days Venice
Four Days Florence
train back to Venice and stay near train station and spend two nights here (it's the weekend so I will have to book two nights).
At first I didn't like the idea of spending two nights in this area, but I figure I will be able to explore san polo and the cannaregio areas. I'll be travelling with my mom (78 yrs old)and I don't think we would be going that far on the first leg of the trip.
What do you think?

OK now I understand. Sounds like a good plan!
Padova is another good option though - you can take the short train ride to Mestre then the bus or book an affordable door to door shuttle service to the airport:
www.taxipadova
or
www.landomas.it
Hope this helps,
Andre

I don't know anything about padova, although others have mentioned it. Are there many things to do sites - restaurants?
I don't want to commit to anything yet - LoveItaly said she had a good idea!
I appreciate everyone's help

OK Sashie, I am trying one more time. Going to make this post short & sweet because have not been able to post my answer to you on this thread. Wrote 4 to 5 times and it would not post. Frustrating!
Yes!!! Pavoda for the 2 nights before your flight leaves from Venice would be perfect. University city. Wonderful cafes, shops, Duomo of San Antonio, people watching. Easy walking for your mother. More questions and I will answer but right now just hope this answer will post for you.

Oh Sashie, at least a "short posting" of mine went through. If you want more info let me know, will keep an eye on this thread. Have been trying to give you info with no success. I did not forget about you, honest. Take care!

SashieZ,
Aside from the impressive Duomo in Padova, the main attraction is actually the Scrovegni chapel with its newly restored Giotto frescoes - unfortunately wasn't reopened when I was there. It's also nice to be in a town that's not overrun by tourists for a change. The market at the Piazza delle Erbe is great and their are often great exhibitions in the spectular great hall of the 13th century the Palazzo delle Ragione dominating the square. The view of the market scene from its terrace throws you back, oh about 500 years
Stayed at the Hotel Grand'Italia, right across from the train station which was very pleasant, though somewhat removed from the old town (15 min. walk or take the frequent bus service), but very close to the Scrovegni.
Here's the website for the Scrovegni (advance bookings strongly advised):

And for the hotel:

Hope this helps,
Andre

Thank you so much for your help...I am definitely going to do some research on Padova and look into staying there before departing for the airport.
One last question... Can I take a taxi to the airport from Padova? Or is it too far.
I know how frustrating it can be to try and post something again and again and again and it not working so I truly appreciate you not giving up LoveItaly!! And a big thanks to you too Andre
Grazie

Actually, both you and SteveJames answered my question in a previous post. Sorry...
I think I'm going back to Venice proper for two nights. If my husband and I were travelling, Padova would be great, but with my mom its different. I don't want to have to take the train and then catch the bus to make our noon flight. I'd rather just take a taxi.
But Padova is definitely on my list for future trips with my husband.

OK now I'm confused. If you follow the links I mentioned, you'll see that a door-to-door car service to the airport from Padova costs EUR 50-60 (takes about an hour).
This is a lot easier than getting to the airport from a hotel in Venice.

well, it's back to Padova and I think I'd better take a break from this thread
thanks once again
