I will be going to Rome, Florence ans Venice this winter and would like to take a day trip to Assisi. Which city from the ones I will be visiting is Assisi closes to? Shall I go by car or train?

Florence is the closest and you can take the train or a bus. The train has an online query you can use www.fs-on-line.com and you can check schedules. M.

I would have said Rome. Makes me wonder if they are roughly equidistant. It is NOT on the main autostrada between rome and Florence though.<BR><BR>The train station is Santa Maria degli Angeli, about three miles directly below Assisi which sits high on a hill.<BR><BR>I recommend car - - as part of a 2-3 days (or more) meander from Rome, onward to somewhere else.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

Deeb<BR>I live 20 mins from Assisi - there are good trains from both Rome and Florence - driving is also easy from both these cities.<BR>Having a car in Assisi gives you options to see more than just the centre of the town - there are some lovely places to visit in the surrounding area.<BR>

is it possible to get to Assisi from Montepulciano or elsewhere in southern tuscany via public transportation. please help... i am currently in Italy. many thanks...

There is a Siena-Assisi bus service, - but from Montepulciano I think your best option will be bus to CHIUSI, then train from Chiusi to Assisi via TERONTOLA (change train at Terontola).<BR><BR>Journey time Chiusi-Assisi via Terontola is 1hr45'-2 hrs.<BR><BR>Trains leave Chiusi for Terontola at:<BR>06.20<BR>07.12<BR>08.04<BR>11.04 ... etc.<BR><BR>For other times see www.trenitalia.it<BR><BR>Hope this helps ...<BR><BR>Steve

Well worth it, but you might consider staying overnight (most Assisi hotels are unusually inexpensive for Italy).<BR><BR>The train from Florence to Assisi is about three hours. Stayed overnight in Assisi, and took the train to Rome the next afternoon (two hours, $19 -- didn't use my Eurailpass).<BR><BR>I wouldn't mess with a car unless you're going to be in the area more than a couple days.

There are also tour companies that have daily bus trips from Rome to Assisi that might be easier for you.

http://www.odyssey-tours.com There are others as well. If you can't find more info on the internet, email the concierge at your Rome hotel. Also, any American Express travel agency will have info on day tours out of Rome--I think they run a few themselves. I have never used one of these companies so I can't make any comments on the quality.
