Ritz is very conservative. We stayed at the Wellington. It is only four star, but has a lot of atmosphere and a gorgeous bar.

Nothing compares to a stay at the Ritz in Paris. An experience to remember!!! I don't find it conservative, it's classy, full of style. I have stayed there often and I can answer all your questions. I also have a review on the Ritz in epinions.com ( my username is teresarg)and on tripadvisor,. be free to ask me any questions and I will email you.

Same is true of Madrid Ritz. The quintessence of elegance and style.

From what I gather, the urban is 4 star, but the other derby hotel there is the villa real - and that is 5 star. so is the park hyatt villa magna in the salamanca district. we're going to be staying at the westin palace - the "grand wedding cake" as some websites call it. beautiful dome and from what i hear not as stuffy as the ritz...(and better priced.)

Hi

I've never stayed at the Urban but checked it out when I was in Madrid. I love the way they have done this hotel. I would describe it as uber cool and funky. It's not my perception of a typical 5* design though. So it may not be for everyone. Have you checked out the Palace Hotel -http://www.westinpalacemadrid.com/eng/informacion/. Beautiful hotel and sure to please!

As for the Ritz, do a search in Fodors for the Ritz Hotel, Madrid. There is a thread on this. One poster commented it was a bit run down.

Hope this helps.

The Derby's Hotel Urban is an upscale 5-star hotel with a rooftop pool and excellent rates. (http://www.derbyhotels.es/eng/urban_in.htm)

The Villa Real is a top of the line 5-star of the Derby Hotel chain that also offers excellent rates. (http://www.derbyhotels.es/eng/villa_real_in.htm)

The 5-star Hotel Wellington is a classic style hotel where you'll often find matadors and other celebrities. (http://www.hotel-wellington.com/)

The 4-star Gran Hotel Canarias is another classic, updated and upscale hotel very centrally located. (http://www.granhotelcanarias.com/)
