Hotels in Vienna
I have been checking out the internet for accommodation in Vienna for 3 nights. Do you have any suggestions? The Congress looks good and also the Wilhelmshof and the Beim Theresianiera. I would appreciate any help I can get . Going in mid Sept. Marnibe

You can do a search here on Fodor's for Vienna Hotels and come up with all sorts of recommendations.
Without knowing your budget, I can only suggest the Hotel Admiral where we have stayed on two separate occasions. It is well located right off Mariahilfterstrasse behind the Museum Quarter. It is only a short walk to the Ringstrasse and the UBahn. The Hotel is clean and reasonably priced.
You can check out their website at:

My husband and I are going to Vienna in August to celebrate our 20th anniversary. I researched hotels long and far since we want to stay some place with a good reputation, as well as great location. We have selected Le Meridien which has excellent reviews. I would advise looking at TripAdvisor for current reviews of hotels in Vienna, or any city for that matter.

Unfortunately, not all of us can afford the Le Meridien. I lived in Vienna for 2 years and feel that the Hotel Admiral offers a good location at a good price. Of course, there are many other good hotels that fall into that category also.

I spent a week at Le Meridien and actually wasn't that impressed. I found the rooms to be too bland in that white linens and blond wood way. And I really, really, really hated the bathrooms. My bathroom had a shower unit only and there was simply NO way to keep the water from going all over the bathroom, which meant using towels to mop up the mess each time (I live in Europe and am used to quirky showers, but the Meridien's was clearly a case of form slapping function upside the head).
The location is nice for August--I stayed there during a VERY cold and windy week in Feb (2005) and the hotel is located exactly between two tram stops, so every night it meant a chilly, windy walk at night.
For the modern "design" hotels in Vienna, I'd choose the Radisson Style Hotel over Le Meridien, although there aren't any rooms with good views (however, it is right next to Herrengasse u-bahn stop and very close to Cafe Central). Or K&K Maria Theresia, specifically for their top floor view rooms with private roof terraces.
The Kaiserin Elisabeth is one of the favorites for traditional hotels, but it's undergoing major renovations and I don't know how soon they'll be finished. I'd give them a miss until the work is done (otherwise, it's a good 4 star choice, esp. if you get a room with a view of St. Stephan's)--in March, anyway, it was chaotic with reception and the breakfast area in temporary makeshift spaces.
I'd like to try the new Do & Co hotel on my next visit.
Of the 5 star hotels, my preference is for the Grand, but I would love to try the Palais Coburg some day. Not in the budget and anyway, they don't take pets. The Ambassador has a terrific location.
My most recent stay was at the Viennart (in March 07) and while it was ok, it doesn't have AC and the rooms would be way too stuffy and hot in August or mid-September.

We stayed at Pension Pertschy a few years ago. The rooms were nice, the breakfast really good, and the location excellent. Its on a quiet street right off of Graben and very near both the Hofburg and St. Stephens.
The hotel gets great reviews on here, and the price is good considering its location.

We've stayed twice at the Konig von Ungarn, a very nice smallish hotel with huge and wonderful rooms, great staff, and a nice breakfast served at table. It's right next to the Mozart House and around the corner from St. Stephen's.

I agree with new Patrick.
I also stayed at the Hotel Carlton Opera which has a good breakfast and nice bathrooms. We actually had a real shower enclosure in beautiful new tile.
The place has a/c and a fabulous breakfast. I stayed there because it had the a/c and the price was right.
Tram lines close by; subway a little farther but walkable. In fact, we walked to the art museum on a pretty day.

We really liked the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth, so I second the suggestion that you e-mail them about construction plans. It's a wonderful hotel, situated on a quiet street near the Stephansdom. If you book with them directly, you might be able to negotiate a discount, like we did.
Otherwise, we had dinner at the Konig von Ungarn and it looked like a nice hotel, too. It gets very good reviews here, as does Pension Pertsky.

I have no idea when the work was completed- as I only know the lobby and dining area were open and functioning when I was there about 7-10 days ago.
No sign of any other work still in progress , no noise, but I was not on the upper floors.
Nothing on the street would indicate any work at all in the hotel.
I assume all is complete as the hotel would want this for their busy season.

I wonder. I like this hotel very much, but every time I've stayed at the KH, there was some work going on, usually repainting in the halls and a bit of remodeling. It's an old building, I suppose it takes quite a bit of upkeep to maintain standards. Anyway, good to know the work on the ground floor is completed.

The last hotel we stayed in Vienna, The Best Western Tigra (the hotel, not its annex) was the one we liked the best. It is within the ring in a convenient and interesting area (although not an interesting street), has an intriguing Mozart connection - he lived for a time in the building that the hotel occupies. It has excellent large rooms and bath and a wonderful buffet breakfast. Also a friendly and helpful staff. It does not have a large fancy lobby, excercise room and such nor does it have a restaurant - there are plenty in the neighborhood. It does have a bar. The price was right too.
