We are family of four (including a baby in baby cot) staying in Rome for 3 nights. I need to decide between these two hotels. I got a last minute rate, so our stay at the Canali (in a suite room, not with the terrace) will actually be cheaper than at the Abruzzi (in a triple room + baby cot/pantheon view). However, I wonder if we will still prefer to be at the Pantheon, as opposed to a few blocks away from P. Navona? In terms of sightseeing, we will spend one day at the Colosseum and the other day @Vatican.
I guess my question is whether the Canali is that much nicer of a hotel, or in other words, how "budget" of a hotel is Abruzzi? I've read the TA reviews and it seems to suggest that Canali may be a little nicer? I know I prefer the location of the Abruzzi, but would be fine at the Canali, if it is better/nicer hotel. And of course, the Canali costs almost 100 euros less. The Albergo Del Senato is out of our price range, I think others around the Pantheon are not available for our dates.

Okay, I have to chime in here. The only hotel I have ever advised against in all our years of travwel is the Canali.
Our room, up three flights of narrow stairs, was the smallest ever. There was no room to open the suitcases. The bed appeared to be a sofa bed rebuilt. The view was of a kitchen in an apartment across the way (the most charming part of the place).
We really are not hard to please, but the Canali was a big disappointment after we had seen so many glowing reviews of the place.

We just returned from our trip and had a pleasant stay at Canali.
We were on the 2nd floor, in a suite, so we had more space than Byrd. But, I can relate to being a tad disappointed (at least initially) with the room, after reading all the great TA reviews. The room was somewhat dark, and we never even opened up the shutters/windows, as there was no real view and we wanted to keep the A/C in. We have 2 little ones, and a stroller, so it was a challenge to negotiate the small space upon entering the Residenza and the stairs.
That being said, I would consider returning in the future, as we enjoyed the location and the staff was friendly/helpful.The hotel prices in Rome are just outrageous, so it is hard to pay as much as we did (even with a 30% last minute discount) for a somewhat budget/moderate type hotel. Nonetheless, I would say that we felt comfortable there and were satisfied with our stay.

If you go back you might want to consider an apartment instead of a hotel. They seem to be much more affordable--or at least you get a lot more space for the same price
Just wanted to clarify, I know it would of been a tad brighter if I opened the shutters, but I tried it, and it did not make much of a difference.
