Hotels in Puglia

Will be in Puglia for three nights and hoping to use one "base hotel" , to keep luggage safe etc. Have been searching either inland from Bari or the adjacent coast towards Brindisi. Do you have suggestions for IT search engines, etc? So far I am surprised at the high prices for late Sept. Any suggestions most welcome.

We spent perhaps the three greatest nights of our three month trip at Polignano di Mare at the Grotta Palazzese Hotel. I've posted about this before if you want to do a search. It made a perfect base for exploring the entire area and what's more was nothing short of magical when we returned each night. Dining in their grotto restaurant was spectacular and we loved this little town and hotel perched on the edge of the sea.
See www.grottapalazzese.it for starters.

Thanks Patrick, I have read your wonderful report on the Calabria area and had a quote of 144 Euro for B/B at Grotta Palazzese for next week. Do you recall if you paid extra for parking. I would go with this quote, as is, but I think the other half will think south Italy SHOULD not be that expensive. He has never been there, but,I traveled this area 40 years ago and if this is fair rate I wish them well. It was so poor in that era. Any other MUSTS in the whole region. We will do the obvious sights. The trip starts with round trip into Lamazia Terme. Then 3 nights each side of a condo week in Tropea. Calabria as the furthest point is getting first attention.
Anyone else have ideas for Calabria accommodation? Useful search sites. We leave the USA on Sept 23. SOON!

I'm not sure which room they are quoting you, but if you look at their website and see the picture of the stone arched/vaulted ceiling with the door leading out to the little balcony hanging over the sea crashing on the rocks below -- that is the room we had. They may have some less expensive rooms in the main building -- ours was around the corner through double doors leading into a sort of vestibule off the tiny street. We were thrilled with the room and the price, as most rooms of this size and quality would be triple that price anywhere else.
No, we did not pay extra for parking, which incidentally consisted of their man moving our car from one place to another along the little streets from time to time. There was no garage. But it was fine.
