Thanks for all the input, everyone. I think we'll stay at the Garibaldi at Politeama, though we may well not wind up using the free parking, after everyone has advised so strongly not to drive in Palermo.

Check out Butera 28. Very safe area and more room than a hotel. The best of the best! WWW.butera28.it
