hotels in Motherwell

I am thinking of visiting Motherwell, Scotland in October. Can't seem to find much info on it. Can someone recommend hotel accomodations near the civic center?
thanks

There is a reason why you can't find much on Motherwell.

It was a centre of heavy industry from the 1830s till the 1980s. It's not a centre of post industrial decline. To be fair a lot of money is being spent on cleaning it up. It is synonomous is Scotland with Ravenscraig ("the Craig&quot a massive, now demolished stellworks, and Motherwell FC, a sort of second rate Premier League football team, and not much else.

ARE there hotels there?

Just curious (very) -- why are you thinking of visiting Motherwell?? Anything in particular you want/need to do there?

There was close to a decade of my life when I was forever having to visit Motherwell (which, I'll remind St Peter if he starts remembering the odd peccadillo, more than outweighs the occasional uncharitable thought). And there was never any need to find out whether its hotels were as grisly as most other aspects of that far from fair burgh.

Glasgow's easily near enough by motorway, and there's a decent train service as well. And Glasgow really is worth staying in (and getting to know)

Sheila meant to say Motherwell's "now" a centre of post industrial decline.

motherwell, like most towns in the central belt of scotland is a bit of a dump, however, should you still wish to go there, i managed to find a coupld of hotels here at the following link:

I am laughing at the idea of Begbie recommending hotels. Can you recommend any china gift shops as well? Maybe a nice tea room?

Half of my family are from Motherwell and around. They can't wait to get out. It's a tip. There is absolutely nothing to see there - even the steel mill's been flattened and turned into a wind-swept park. The most popular local activity is necking temazepam and diamond white.

Is there a reason you need to be in Motherwell itself? If not look either at Glasgow or perhaps some of the little towns in Clydesdale (sorry can't recommend specifics, when I go there I stay with grumpy relatives and drink diamond white)

Thinking more about this -- idmom, if you're visiting someone who lives in Motherwell, stay with them. If you don't know anyone there, go just about anyplace else in Scotland.

Unfortunately there is a major dance competition there. I'm not sure why the powers that be chose Motherwell...maybe they are trying to help the local economy.
What exactly is diamond white?

I really can't help w/ Motherwell. If you will have a car you could look farther away - like New Lanark or other places an be w/ 20 mins.

Or if I remember right, there is a Holiday Inn Express just off the motorway.

Ok, I'll tell you but honest, I've never tasted it.

Diamond White is an extra strong (and cheap) cider often used in the Motherwell area for, ummmmm, social occasions and the like.

Well thanks for all your help everyone. If I do go to Motherwell I will report back on accomodations. I think I will pass on the Diamond White...don't suppose I could get a lovely glass of Chardonnay.

idmom,

Just to endorse what flannerUK says - there's a frequent & quick rail service from Glasgow city centre so there's really no need to stay in Motherwell itself.

Motherwell's not really a chardonnay sort of place. More a diamond white, pint of heavy, bottle of meths kind of place.

Wont they have those little bottles of Stowells wine? (which I detest!)

The only wine you're likely to come across in Motherwell is Buckfast.
