I stayed at the Balmoral and it is one of the loveliest hotels you can stay at. The room was not huge but was beautifully appointed and had heated towel racks. The bar in the lobby was dedicated by Sean Connery and is a nice place to sit a savor a single malt. The location is perfect for touring - no car needed within the city. I would go back.

Stayed at the Balmoral two weeks ago for 3 nights. axelrod6 is quite right. Lovely place. Great service and concierge service. They upgraded my wife and I for no apparent reason.
Within walking distance of most everything in the CBD.

The Balmoral is one of the best hotels in the country- grab it with both hands if you can afford it.
Other good horels would include the Scotsman, the Hollyrood, the Caledonian. Some people like the Point. malmaison in Leith is fun

I stayed at the Carlton last year. Location is right on Northbridge, close to train. Smack in the middle between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Walking distance to everything. Very nice hotel; great staff and gym.
